Praying In the Holy Spirit or Praying in Tongues - 2

Subject:  More Benefits to Being Spirit Filled
by Rick Welborne

1 Corinthians 14:1-5 (NKJV)
1  Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.
2  For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
3  But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.
4  He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
5  I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

--Again tonight we will look at the benefits of being Spirit filled or praying in the Spirit or speaking in tongues whatever you choose to say.

--Again let me make this distinction…Paul keeps going back and forth between the public use of tongues which is for the edification of the body (church) and the private use of tongues – edification of the person.

--4  He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself…5  I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

--I hope you can see the two distinctions here between private and public use.  Before I continue the study let me point out a few more things from Paul and then we will move to John. Listen to Paul the great Apostle:

1 Corinthians 14:18 (NKJV)
18  I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all;

--To me this next verse is one of the craziest verses in the whole Bible.  I say that because so many Spirit filled people are so concerned when a lost person comes to church that someone might speak in tongues:

1 Corinthians 14:22 (NKJV)
22  Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe.

--I have you now, Pastor, right here in chapter 14 it says it is better to prophesy than to speak in tongues, true but it also says:

1 Corinthians 14:5 (NKJV)
5  I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

--When Paul continues to speak of prophesy (speaking in an understood language) here is including or saying that tongues with interpretation is prophesy or equal to prophesy. Prove it…tongues are a sign to unbelievers:

1 Corinthians 14:23-25 (NKJV)
23  Therefore if the whole church comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those who are uninformed or unbelievers, will they not say that you are out of your mind?
24  But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an uninformed person comes in, he is convinced by all, he is convicted by all.
25  And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed; and so, falling down on his face, he will worship God and report that God is truly among you.

--This sounds like tongues would be confusing to an unbeliever when he comes into the church so how can tongues be a sign to unbelievers…the tongues in a public setting for the body must be interpreted.

--Is it out of order when people all pray in tongues at the same time? This chapter says that in a corporate setting only one tongue should be given at a time and that it is to be interpreted and at the most by two or three.

--Again we must ask, is there a biblical precedence for all to speak in tongues at the same time…look at three places in Acts…Day of Pentecost, Cornelius House, and the church in Ephesus.

Acts 2:1-4 (NKJV)
1  When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2  And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3  Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.
4  And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 10:44-47 (NKJV)
44  While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word.
45  And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.
46  For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered,
47  "Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?"

Acts 19:1-7 (NKJV)
1  And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples
2  he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" So they said to him, "We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit."
3  And he said to them, "Into what then were you baptized?" So they said, "Into John's baptism."
4  Then Paul said, "John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus."
5  When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6  And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.
7  Now the men were about twelve in all.

--Theses verses show three places in the Scriptures where multiple people were filled with Holy Spirit power and spoke in tongues.
--This would be both categories…edifying the church and the individuals but not per say the gift of tongues and interpretation as listed in 1 Cor. 12. We cannot put Holy Spirit in a box.

--Please be patient with me as I clarify some of these things…many of you this is elementary, some of you it is clarification, and for others it is a fresh and new perspective.

--Last place of misunderstanding before we move on:

1 Corinthians 12:7-11 (NKJV)
7  But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
8  for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,
9  to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,
10  to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
11  But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

--These are gifts of Holy Spirit given sovereignly as God wills to profit all (that is the body) and I believe, given as they are needed…why would God give the gift of healing to someone if no one was sick? Stay with me!

1 Corinthians 12:28-31 (NKJV)
28  And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues.
29  Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles?
30  Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?
31  But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.

--This is where so many non – Pentecostal believers get confused about the baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues.

--These verses are not talking about being baptized in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues but instead is talking about the use of these gifts in corporate worship…the whole chapter is about the body.

--Of course, not all will speak in tongues, of course not will all interpret tongues, of course not all will have gifts of healing, of course not all will work miracles…Paul makes this very clear.

--This is the corporate use of the gifts of Holy Spirit for the edification of the body of Christ but what does the Word say about the baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues?

Acts 2:36-39 (NKJV)
36  "Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."
37  Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?"
38  Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
39  For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call."

--After Peter preaches to them I want you to notice the progression here in Acts 2…

A. This crucified Jesus is preached as Lord and Christ.

B. These people are cut to the heart (convicted) of their sin and their guilt of crucifying Christ…What shall we do?

C. Peter told them to repent or turn away from their sin (get saved or born again) and be baptized (water) in the Name of Jesus Christ for the remission (forgiveness) of their sins.

--Repentance is not just stopping the bad you were doing or turning from your sin, it is also turning to God and being saved.

--People say, I will wait until I get my life together and then, I will come to church. It is like saying I will wait until I get in shape before I go to the gym or wait till I get well to go to the doctor…crazy.

D. Peter said to them, if you do this you will receive the same experience that we just received, you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

E. Peter said to them, this gift (this promise) is for everyone; it is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.

Acts 2:39 (NCV)
39  This promise is for you, for your children, and for all who are far away. It is for everyone the Lord our God calls to himself.

--This is all inclusive to whom Peter was speaking, to their children, to all who are far off either by distance or time, to everyone the Lord saves.  It is for today. It is for you and for me.
