Praying in the Holy Spirit or Praying in Tongues - 5

Subject:  More Benefits to Being Spirit Filled
by Rick Welborne

John 16:1-15 (NLT)
1  “I have told you these things so that you won’t abandon your faith.
2  For you will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing a holy service for God.
3  This is because they have never known the Father or me.
4  Yes, I’m telling you these things now, so that when they happen, you will remember my warning. I didn’t tell you earlier because I was going to be with you for a while longer.
5  “But now I am going away to the One Who sent Me, and not one of you is asking where I am going.
6  Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you.
7  But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send Him to you.
8  And when He comes, He will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.
9  The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in Me.
10  Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see Me no more.
11  Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.
12  “There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now.
13  When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own but will tell you what He has heard. He will tell you about the future.
14  He will bring me glory by telling you whatever He receives from Me.
15  All that belongs to the Father is Mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever He receives from Me.’

--We have been looking at the importance of having Holy Spirit baptism in our lives and how He helps us in so many ways.

--I hope by now you have set aside any bias you have had toward Holy Spirit and are hungering for more and more of Him.

--As we look at reference after reference to Him in the Scriptures we see how He has been sent to the Father to give us what we need to live in a godless world and the power to be His witnesses.

--Tonight we will look at John chapter 16 and see three different encouragements (there are more) that will help us walk out this relationship with Holy Spirit…help us to truly walk in the Spirit.

--Don’t abandon your faith, Don’t miss how important it is for Holy Spirit to come, and don’t miss how relevant Holy Spirit is in the conversion of the lost and repentance of the saints.

1. Don’t abandon your faith.

John 16:1-4 (NLT)
1  “I have told you these things so that you won’t abandon your faith.
2  For you will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing a holy service for God.
3  This is because they have never known the Father or Me.

4  Yes, I’m telling you these things now, so that when they happen, you will remember my warning. I didn’t tell you earlier because I was going to be with you for a while longer.

--We are definitely living in a time where those who claim to be Christian are under persecution. In America it seems that everyone has rights except for those who belong to Jesus. In the Middle East it is death.

--I truly believe God is giving us a window of opportunity with this new administration and I pray we will take advantage of what God has blessed us. Listen to what President Trump just put out about religious freedom:

"This Constitutional protection ensures that Americans and their religious organizations will not be coerced by the Federal Government into participating in activities that violate their consciences, and will remain free to express their viewpoints without suffering adverse treatment from the Federal Government. It shall be the policy of this Administration to protect religious freedom."

--The Apostle Paul warns us that when we get near the coming or return of Christ there will be a great falling away. Funny how people believe you can’t fall away…not really very funny!

2 Thessalonians 2:1-4 (NKJV)
1  Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you,
2  not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of Christ had come.
3  Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition,
4  who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.

--Evil will wax worse and worse (2 Tim.3) and those who live righteously will suffer persecution…Paul exhorts Timothy to stay in the inspired Word of God and to stir up the gift within him (Holy Spirit).

--Hear your pastor, you do not have to be one of those who fall away…it is a choice…when you keep your eyes on Jesus, when you look into the Word of God, and when you are Spirit filled you don’t have to fall…

--Listen to these verses from Jude and keep them in the context of Holy Spirit:

Jude 1:17-23 (NIV)
17  But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold.
18  They said to you, "In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires."
19  These are the men who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.
20  But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit.
21  Keep yourselves in God's love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.
22  Be merciful to those who doubt;
23  snatch others from the fire and save them; to others show mercy, mixed with fear--hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.
--He says things will be tough but you take personal responsibility and build yourselves up in your faith…How?
You pray in the Spirit and you keep yourselves in God’s love…stop blaming others for you falling.

--Be a soul winner…snatch others from the fire and save them…keeping seeking Jesus:

Jude 1:24-25 (NIV)
24  To Him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before His glorious presence without fault and with great joy--
25  to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.

--The context of the first few verses in John 16 is just directing Jesus’ followers to be aware Holy Spirit is coming and He will provide all that they need.

2. Don’t miss how important it is for Holy Spirit to come.

John 16:5-7 (NLT)
5  “But now I am going away to the One Who sent Me, and not one of you is asking where I am going.
6  Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you.
7  But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send Him to you.

John 16:7 (NIV)  It is for your good

John 16:7 (NKJV) It is to your advantage

John 16:7 (NCV) It is better for you

John 16:7 (ASV) It is expedient for you

--Obviously it is good Holy Spirit is coming to give us the power to overcome the fear or desire to abandon our faith but there is definitely more.

John 16:13-15 (NLT)
13  When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own but will tell you what He has heard. He will tell you about the future.
14  He will bring me glory by telling you whatever He receives from Me.
15  All that belongs to the Father is Mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever He receives from Me.’

A. Holy Spirit will guide you into all truth…He will guide you to Jesus.

--Even Jesus told His disciples…I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life…no one comes to the Father except thru me.

--If Holy Spirit will guide us to Truth and Jesus is the Truth, who would not want Holy Spirit baptism?

B. Holy Spirit will listen to Jesus, share with us what He hears, and then, He will tell us the future.

--This again points us to the unity of the Trinity…Holy Spirit is not doing His own thing but was sent to communicate Jesus’ message to the church.

--You are exemplifying living a Spirit filled life when you have the good of your brothers and sisters in mind…
There is no room for I and me in the Kingdom…it is when we are the most like Lucifer…I will ascend!

C. Holy Spirit will bring glory to Jesus.
--Again, one who is filled with Holy Spirit will have a spirit of humility, and their goal will not be to look great themselves, but to exalt Jesus above all else.

--Humility and Holy Spirit will make you to be a servant…even if your superior sends you to check the bathrooms first.  Servant leadership is the model here…there is no room for arrogance and pride.

D. Holy Spirit will tell you what He receives from Jesus.

Romans 8:26-29 (NKJV)
26  Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
27  Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
28  And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
29  For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

3. Don’t miss how relevant Holy Spirit is in the conversion of the lost and the conviction of our sin.

John 16:7-8 (NLT)
7  But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send Him to you.
8  And when He comes, He will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.
--One of the reasons we do not see the conversions that we want to see is because there is very little conviction present in our presentation of the Gospel…it is more us and less Holy Spirit.
--What would happen in our sharing Christ with the lost if we have spent time with Holy Spirit, if we have prayed in the Holy Spirit, and if we are walking in the Spirit? Would He make a difference? Absolutely!
--If Holy Spirit comes to convict the world of its sin, to convince them of God’s righteousness or goodness, and to convince them that judgment is coming…He must be present when we share Christ.
--Again, the example of my father and mother…I prayed and prayed in the Spirit for them, and by my dad’s reaction, thought I was not getting thru…His testimony proved that wrong.
--His words…Every time you spoke to me it was like a spear thru my heart…that is called conviction.
--I am glad Holy Spirit will do this for the sinners but what about the saints…yesterday in prayer Holy Spirit convicted me of making my own plans about my future…I repented.
--As I continued to pray and even weep…He convinced me of His righteousness…the good He wanted to do for me…wow!
--He even shared with me future judgment where thousands will stand around the throne because of what Life Church is doing thru Missions and thru growing by reaching the lost.

--Who would not want Holy Spirit in their lives?
