Holy Spirit – The Wind of the Sprit

Subject: Looking at Five Aspects Holy Spirit Wind Brought
by Rick Welborne

Acts 2:1-2 (NKJV)
1  When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2  And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.

--Tonight we will look at five aspects from Acts 2 relating to the Wind of the Spirit.

1. The Wind of Change

Acts 2:1-4 (NKJV)
1  When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2  And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3  Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.
4  And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Isaac Newton – Everything continues in a state of rest unless it is compelled to change by forces impressed upon it.

--The Wind of the Spirit was the force and is the force needed to compel change in the church of Jesus Christ.
Pentecost ushered in a new day and a new way of God’s dealing with man.

--Let me give you an Old Testament example:

Genesis 2:7 (NKJV)
7  And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

--As the man was dead without the “Ruach – Breath of God” so the church is lifeless and powerless without the Wind of the Spirit…the first man Adam needed change and now His church needs change also.

John Piper – Some people are thrilled by change, others are threatened by change.

--In Eze.37 the dry bones needed change…they were dry and they were obviously dead…They definitely needed change…The Lord instructed Ezekiel:

Ezekiel 37:9-14 (NIV)
9  Then he said to me, "Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe into these slain, that they may live.'"
10  So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet--a vast army.
11  Then he said to me: "Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, 'Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.'
12  Therefore prophesy and say to them: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: O my people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel.
13  Then you, my people, will know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves and bring you up from them.
14  I will put my Spirit in you and you will live…

2. The Wind of Controversy

Lyman Beecher – No great advance has been made in science, politics, or religion without controversy.

--The disciples like Jesus expected and embraced controversy. They viewed it as inevitable, essential and even desirable to see the transformation they were expecting.

--Some of you may feel pressure from some of your peers because you are attending Life Church…you know that it is one of those churches…you know what I am saying.

--Neighbor’s kids told me that they were not supposed to be at our house playing with my sons and I asked why?  Mom told us you pastor that cult down the street!

--The crowd on the day of Pentecost had many emotions about what was happening:

Acts 2:7-8 &12-13 (NIV)
7  Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans?
8  Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language?
12  Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?"
13  Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine."

--How does the church respond to such controversy:

Acts 2:14 (NIV)
14  Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. (spoke up)

Acts 2:16 (NIV)
16  No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:  (opened up)

Acts 2:22 (NIV)
22  "Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know.  (lifted up – Jesus)

Acts 2:38-39 (NIV)
38  Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
39  The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--for all whom the Lord our God will call."  (Offered up the Promise).

--Shouldn’t we stand up, shouldn’t we speak up, shouldn’t we lift up Jesus, shouldn’t we offer up the Promise of salvation and Holy Spirit?

--Controversy always proceeds change…without it there is no significant change…look at America.

3. The Wind of Courage

--The Wind of the Holy Spirit changed this band of disciples from cowards locked away in the upper room into courageous soldiers confronting the culture of its day with a fearless proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ!

Acts 4:13 (NIV)
13  When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. – The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands in times of challenge and controversy.

John P. Adams – When the church stands up for and with God she will discover God has already stood up with and for her.

Matthew 16:18-19 (NLT)
18  Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.
19  And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.”

--When Stephen was being martyred for his faith, look what he saw:

Acts 7:55-56 (NKJV)
55  But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,
56  and said, "Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!"

4. The Wind of Conviction

Acts 2:36-38 (NKJV)
36  "Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."
37  Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?"
38  Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

--As Peter spoke to the crowd under the inspiration of Holy Spirit the people’s hearts were laid bare by the surgical precision of the Spirit.

--When Holy Spirit is present and doing what He does, the preacher or the witnesses job becomes that much easier. What He does:

John 16:7-11 (NKJV)
7  Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
8  And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9  of sin, because they do not believe in Me;
10  of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more;
11  of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

5. The Wind of Community

Acts 2:42-47 (NKJV)
42  And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.
43  Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.
44  Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common,
45  and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need.
46  So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart,
47  praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

--This sense of community is what I love so much about Life Church…Tricia and I have raised our kids here and it has been an awesome atmosphere for them.

--The presence of Holy Spirit and the love of family has endeared us to the church for over 28 years.

1 Corinthians 12:12-13 (NLT)
12  The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ.
13  Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.

John P. Adams – Those who believed were added to the church. There is no such thing as a Spirit-filled believer who does not have a relationship with the local church.

--Paul said we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.

Acts 2:44 (NKJV)
44  Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common…

--Obviously, if you are filled with Holy Spirit and led by Holy Spirit, you will connect with the local church.

Proverbs 18:1-3 (NKJV)
1  A man who isolates himself seeks his own desire; He rages against all wise judgment.
2  A fool has no delight in understanding, But in expressing his own heart.
3  When the wicked comes, contempt comes also; And with dishonor comes reproach.
